Raindrops keep falling on my head
Fox township to Karangarua
36.2km
Oh, for the weather crystal ball! It only took us 1 3/4 hours to get here from Fox, and between noon and 1:45 it was dry, even a spot or two of watery sunshine. Not that we know what it's been like up the road, of course...
So we've been sitting in our Pine Grove motel unit since just after 11, playing cards and drinking motel coffee, our stuff hanging limp on our makeshift line trying to dry in the still humidity.
From town we dropped down/up/along to the Fox River crossing. Yesterday's milky blue rapid is now a dirty grey, raging torrent. Doublely glad we got our photo yesterday; there's a DOC worker and his Ute stopping entry to the car park and track. Needless to say, we didn't stop to find out if only the parking was closed, or the whole track. Like Monday, the weather is officially showers, but this is simply a meteorological term: the rain is continuous, just varying in intensity. Once again most drivers are considerate of the mad buggers on bikes, only one insisting on passing on a blind brow despite my defensive road position, and a coach driver who seemed unaware of the width of his vehicle. I blasphemed involuntarily, and Marg gave him a not-so-friendly salute!
We did stop for a couple of photos, even riding back briefly to capture a particularly rare species of waterfowl (see photo). We assume it's there for the amusement of cyclists, as no one passing at traffic speed could possibly spot it! On that quick about face we discovered just how much wind assistance we were getting.
So a quiet afternoon... Did I mention that the SI TA is living up to it's phone killing reputation, so Marg is about to take over to update all her followers? TTFN...
PS: NZ's 2 degrees of separation strikes again. Turns out our motel hosts tonight are good friends of the sailng friends we visited in Hokitika... Small world.
🐤 Looks like my Ducky Cycles mascot must've jumped off my bike and had a night on the town last year...! 🤣
